5 Easy Steps to Stain Success

      1.     Go to Douglas & Son Inc, with over 200 years experience we are Southwest Michigan’s stain experts.  We have all the advice and customer service you need that you just can’t find at any chain store or home improvement warehouse.

     2.     Use appropriate wood cleaner.  A wood cleaner does an excellent job of removing oxidized stain and, and opening up the wood to take a stain it also removes the graying and weathered look.  Some wood cleaners have a shelf life so avoid using that gallon from a couple of years ago on your project.

     3.     A wood brightener will brighten up your wood, removes mill glaze on new wood, and is very important step for tannin rich woods like cedar and redwood.  Tannin rich woods will darken and continue to darken after wood cleaner, the wood brightener will reverse this effect.  The brightness of your wood will also determine the color of a transparent or semi-transparent stain.

     4.    Allow at least 4 days of dry weather before applying stain, and make sure rain is not in the immediate forecast.  Sand rough or fuzzy areas and especially hand rails and benches.  Avoid staining in the direct sunlight, ideal conditions are 50-85 degrees with low humidity. 

     5.    Maintain your stain with yearly cleanings.  Check water absorption on your wood by pouring 1/2 cup water on it, if it soaks in right before your eyes it might be time for a light maintenance coat.  This is the best way to get a long lasting finish here in Michigan.
